
In addition to warning that Washington will “remain vigilant” against the emergence of terrorist groups, Biden announced that US forces had recently carried out new strikes against militants from the militant Islamic State group (IS) in the first comprehensive US response to Assad’s overthrow by a coalition of rebel factions
Biden, who is scheduled to resign in January to let Republican Donald Trump to retake the presidency, stated that Washington will help Syrians rebuild
In order to create a transition from the Assad regime to an independent, sovereign Syria “with a new constitution,” he declared, “we will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the UN.”
Biden did, however, warn that the triumphant rebel alliance will be scrutinized for its hardline fighter factions.
“A number of the rebel organizations that overthrew Assad have a sordid history of terrorism and violations of human rights,” Biden stated.
“We will assess not just their words, but their actions,” he added, adding that the United States had “taken note” of recent declarations by rebels indicating they had now tempered
Washington is “clear-eyed,” according to Biden, that the extremist Islamic State organization, commonly referred to as ISIS, “will try to take advantage of any vacuum to reestablish” itself in Syria.
He said, “We will not allow that to occur,” and added that US soldiers had attacked IS inside Syria on Sunday
