According to Kazakh police, 27 people survived Wednesday’s crash of an Embraer passenger jet carrying 62 passengers and five crew members from Azerbaijan to Russia near the Kazakh city of Aktau.
Unconfirmed footage of the incident showed dense black smoke billowing and the Azerbaijan Airlines-operated plane exploding into flames as it struck the ground. Passengers were observed staggering from a portion of the fuselage that had survived, bloodied and damaged.
In a statement, the emergency ministry of the Central Asian nation claimed that firefighters had extinguished the fire and that three children were among the survivors receiving medical attention at a local hospital.
The Embraer 190 aircraft, flight number J2-8243, was traveling from Baku to Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechnya, when it was forced to make an emergency landing about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the Kazakh city of Aktau, according to Azerbaijan Airlines.
“There were 67 people on board, including 62 passengers and 5 crew members,” the airline stated in a recent post on X. No children were among the passengers, and details regarding the injured will be released soon.
“The information indicates that some survivors are getting initial medical help.”
According to Russian news outlets, Grozny’s fog forced the plane to be redirected.
According to Russia’s Interfax news agency, Kazakhstani authorities stated they had started investigating several explanations for what transpired, including a technological issue.
According to a statement from Russia’s aviation watchdog, initial data indicated the pilot had chosen to make an emergency landing following a bird hit.
Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, was on his way home from Russia after the disaster, where he was scheduled to attend a conference on Wednesday, according to Russia’s RIA news agency.
In a statement, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who is supported by the Kremlin, offered his sympathies, said that the hospitalized individuals were in a very bad condition, and that he and others would pray for a speedy recovery.
