Following the largest attack on Kyiv so far, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is not ‘happy’ with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called him ‘crazy.’
According to a BBC News report, Trump condemned Putin, saying, “What has happened to him? He is killing a lot of people.” He added that Putin has “completely gone crazy.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had criticized Washington’s ‘silence’ on the recent Russian attacks, stating it was encouraging Putin. He called for increased pressure on Moscow and the imposition of harsher sanctions.
On Sunday night, Russia launched an attack involving 367 drones and missiles, resulting in at least 12 deaths and dozens injured in Ukraine. This was the largest single-night attack since Putin launched the full-scale invasion in 2022.
By Monday morning, air raid sirens sounded again in several parts of Ukraine, warning of incoming drones and missiles.
According to Mayor Igor Terekhov, at least three people, including a child, were injured in the northeastern city of Kharkiv.
Regional head Ivan Fedorov reported two people were injured in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that air defense units intercepted two Ukrainian drones heading toward the Russian capital, with no casualties reported so far.
Speaking to journalists in New Jersey on Sunday night, Donald Trump said he has known Putin for a long time and always had good relations with him, but now Putin is “bombarding cities with rockets and killing people,” which Trump strongly disapproves of.
When asked whether he was considering increasing U.S. sanctions on Russia, Trump replied, “Definitely.”
The U.S. president has previously threatened to increase sanctions on Russia multiple times, but no new sanctions have yet been implemented.
Shortly afterward, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Putin has completely gone crazy. I have always said that he wants not just part of Ukraine, but the whole country. This may prove to be true, but if he tries that, it will lead to Russia’s downfall.”
However, Trump also criticized Zelensky harshly, saying, “The way he speaks is not in the best interest of his country. Everything Zelensky says causes problems. I don’t like it at all, and he should shut up. If I were president, this war would never have happened. This is Biden’s, Zelensky’s, and Putin’s war, not Trump’s.”
While Kyiv’s European allies are preparing to impose further sanctions on Russia, the U.S. has said it will continue efforts to advance peace talks but will ‘step back’ if no progress is made.
Last week, Trump and Putin had a two hour phone conversation discussing a U.S. proposed ceasefire agreement.
Trump had said he was confident the call went “very well” and that Russia and Ukraine would soon begin negotiations for an immediate ceasefire and end to the war.
Ukraine publicly agreed to a 30-day ceasefire.
Putin only stated that Russia would prepare a memorandum for a potential future peace agreement with Ukraine a move Kyiv and its European allies consider a stalling tactic.
On May 16, the first direct talks between Ukraine and Russia since 2022 took place in Istanbul, Turkey. Aside from a major prisoner exchange last week, there has been no significant progress toward a ceasefire.
Currently, Russia occupies about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.
