Despite promises that he would not get involved in his son Hunter’s legal issues, US President Joe Biden officially pardoned him on Sunday. Hunter was facing punishment for two criminal offenses.
The president stated in a statement, “It is wrong that Hunter was singled out because he is my son. No reasonable person who considers the facts of Hunter’s cases can come to any other conclusion.”
The action will undoubtedly raise new questions about the independence of the US legal system, particularly in light of the fact that Donald Trump, the next president, has already appointed supporters to the Justice Department and FBI.
The younger Biden entered a guilty plea in a separate tax evasion trial earlier this year after being found guilty of lying about using drugs when purchasing a firearm, a crime. However, he was not sentenced.
In the closing weeks of his administration before Trump assumes office on January 20, Joe Biden has stated time and time again that he would not pardon his son.
Despite witnessing my son being unfairly and selectively persecuted, President Biden declared in his address on Sunday that he would not meddle in the Justice Department’s decision-making process.
He went on to say, “The charges in his cases only arose after a number of my congressional political rivals incited them to attack me and oppose my election.”
“Although I have struggled with this, I also believe that raw politics has corrupted the justice system and caused a miscarriage of justice.”
The pardon coincides with the halting of criminal cases against president-elect Trump following a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, which virtually guarantees Biden’s Republican opponent will never be imprisoned, despite his historic conviction for falsifying business records in May.
