Concerned by rights organisations over his reported detention from Islamabad last night, senior journalist Matiullah Jan was charged with terrorism and drug offences on Thursday.
The journalist was charged in a first information report (FIR) early on Thursday after Jan’s son claimed that his father had been “abducted” from Islamabad by “unknown individuals” previous night.
Asad Toor, a journalist, told Dawn.com that he had met Jan in the morning but was transferred somewhere else. Regarding Jan’s health, Toor stated, “He was fine.”
“I was able to meet him once because there was nobody at the Margalla police station when I arrived early in the morning,” Toor stated.
After removing him from the Margalla police station, they vanished somewhere. We don’t know which court they will produce him in, and we don’t know where he is right now,” the journalist continued.
Toor claimed that a police officer provided him a FIR related to the PTI demonstration, which omitted Jan’s name, after he insisted that the police produce a FIR in which Jan was arrested.
But later, it was revealed that the anchor had been arrested early Thursday in connection with a terrorist investigation that also involved drug possession accusations.
On the complaint of Superintendent of Police Asif Ali, the Margalla police filed the FIR, which Toor shared
It stated that when Jan’s car was pulled over at E-9 in the federal capital, 246 grammes of the drug methamphetamine (crystal meth) were discovered in his possession.
At 3:20 am, about an hour after the alleged crime occurred, the case was filed.
