According to a statement released on Sunday by the provincial home department spokeswoman, the Punjab government has chosen to establish a central DNA database in order to facilitate the prompt identification of criminals and repeat offenders. A team of experts has been assembled for this purpose.
With China’s help, Pakistan opened its first DNA testing lab in Islamabad in 2006 to look into complex criminal and terrorism cases.
The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) will gather DNA samples from criminals, particularly repeat offenders, and inmates in jails around the province.
According to the spokesperson, the database seeks to improve the criminal justice system’s effectiveness and the “timely” identification of criminal suspects.
A working committee of specialists has been established to propose a concept for the establishment of the central DNA database in this regard, under the directives of Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin.
The group’s members include DIG Athar Waheed, PFSA Director (Administration) Mirza Waleed Baig, Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology Director Prof. Dr. Muaz-ur-Rehman, King Edward Medical University Head of Biomedical Sciences Prof. Dr. Nighat Yasmin, and PFSA Director General Dr. Muhammad Amjad.
The working group has been given seven days to provide the home secretary with its recommendations about the setup and operation of the central database.
