In a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday night, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Iran’s willingness to assist in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan, according to Tehran’s state-run IRNA.
In what is being called the bloodiest armed assault in the disputed Himalayan area since 2000, 26 people—mostly tourists—were slain in the April 22 attack in Pahalgam. The hitherto unidentified The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility for the attack.
Since the incident, the nuclear-armed countries have taken a number of actions against one another. In retaliation, Pakistan threatened to halt the Simla Agreement and close its airspace to Indian aircraft, while India unilaterally suspended the crucial Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
Pakistan has vehemently denied any involvement, while India has suggested that the terrorists had cross-border ties.
The article claims that PM Shehbaz praised Iran’s willingness to assist in reducing tensions and restated his formal invitation to the Iranian president.
The premier also emphasized that Pakistan wanted peace in the area and that Islamabad would welcome Iran’s involvement if it so desired.
The statement said, “Pakistan has no connection to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, located in the India-held Kashmir region, and condemns all forms of terrorism.”
Pakistan has been one of the worst victims of terrorism in the last 20 years, with thousands of its citizens dying and the government spending billions of dollars to fight this threat. The prime minister also reiterated that Pakistan is prepared to “participate in a transparent and unbiased investigation into the terrorist attack.”
He stated that weaponizing water was “unacceptable and that Islamabad will defend itself at any cost” in reference to India’s decision over the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
Following the devastating explosion at Shahid Rajaee port, the prime minister “expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and people, saying Islamabad is ready to assist Tehran in addressing this incident,” according to the agency.
For his part, Iranian President Pezeshkian commended Pakistan’s efforts for “peace in the region” and thanked the premier “for his solidarity regarding the incident at Shahid Rajaee port.”
The article stated that Sharif extended his invitation to Pezeshkian to visit Islamabad after the Iranian president invited the prime minister of Pakistan to visit Tehran.
