According to a statement from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a 5.3-magnitude earthquake occurred on Saturday in several places around Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the PMD, the epicenter of the earthquake is in the Hindukush region, and it struck at a depth of 230 kilometers.
Anwar Shahzad, a spokesman for the KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), told Dawn.com that no injuries or damage had been recorded.
He stated that parts of KP, including Abbottabad, Mardan, Swat, and Swabi, felt the vibrations of the earthquake.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck the Swat and surrounding regions last month, with an epicenter near Hindukush and a depth of 185 kilometers.
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 12 between Islamabad and Rawalpindi was accompanied by tremors from another previous earthquake that also affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In the first half of February, Pakistan saw about 20 low-intensity earthquakes, or more than one tremor every day on average.
Experts have noted, however, that by continuously releasing stored energy inside the tectonic plates, such small seismic activity “preempts” high-intensity earthquakes.
According to geological engineer Muhammad Rehan, Pakistan is situated on three major tectonic plates: the Arabian, Eurasianand Indian. As a result, the country is divided into five seismic zones.
