President-elect Donald Trump has appointed a Florida senator who has a reputation for taking a firm position against China as his next national security adviser, and another is expected to be named secretary of state.
Trump appointed Michael Waltz, a Florida House member and military veteran, as his national security advisor, a crucial position that counsels the president on how the United States should respond to external threats.
Meanwhile, sources informed CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that Senator Marco Rubio is anticipated to become Trump’s future secretary of state. However, the selection is not yet official.
On Tuesday, Trump reaffirmed his desire for Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, to have a major role as secretary of homeland security.
Following his victory in the presidential election last week, Trump’s government is beginning to take shape.
Additionally, Republicans are gaining complete control of Congress. As vote-counting goes on, they are slowly gaining a majority in the House, the lower house, and have regained control of the Senate, the upper house.
The Senate will need to approve some of the nominations, such as the secretary of state, but Trump, who is also a Republican, has insisted that the next Senate leader allow him to get around this requirement. He has the authority to directly hire people for various positions, such as national security adviser.
Trump praised the Florida congressman as a “expert on threats posed by China, Russia, Iran, and global terrorism” as he formally introduced Waltz as the next national security advisor on Tuesday.
Waltz, according to Trump, is a “strong champion of my America First Foreign Policy agenda”
Waltz, Noem, and perhaps Rubio were appointed after Trump appointed former immigration official Tom Homan as his “border tsar,” appointed New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as his prospective ambassador to the UN, and appointed Susie Wiles as his chief of staff.
Approximately 4,000 political appointments are under the purview of a president-elect. Trump spent months to put together his cabinet during his first term in office.
