Iran and Russia have reportedly signed a defense agreement worth approximately Rs 1.64 trillion (around $1.64 billion), marking a significant expansion of military cooperation between the two nations.
Under the reported deal, Tehran will acquire advanced shoulder-fired air defense systems aimed at strengthening its short-range air defense capabilities. Over the next three years, Russia is expected to supply 500 modern Verba launch units along with 2,500 9M336 missiles.
The Verba system is considered a next-generation man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS), designed to target low-flying aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. Defense analysts say the acquisition could substantially enhance Iran’s layered air defense network amid rising regional security tensions.
While officials have not publicly disclosed detailed terms of the agreement, the scale of the reported procurement underscores deepening strategic alignment between Tehran and Moscow, particularly in the defense and security sectors.
The development is likely to draw international attention, especially from Western governments monitoring military cooperation between the two countries. Further official confirmation and technical details are expected in the coming days.
