TEHRAN: According to state media on Saturday, Iran has protested to Moscow over what it called the “violent” arrest of Iranian students at a university in the Russian city of Kazan.
According to a statement from Iran’s consulate in the city, the IRNA official news agency reported that two Iranian students who went to a visa extension center at Kazan Federal University on Friday were taken into custody after being given an “inhumane and unprofessional beating” by the police.

Iran responded by sending the Russian Foreign Ministry “a protest note” denouncing the “violent treatment of the Iranian students by the police,” according to IRNA.
Russia’s close ally Iran has asked for “explanations” for what happened. After the embassy intervened, the two students were released late Friday.
On Friday, the Kazan police’s news department reported via Telegram that a dispute between students had descended into violence and that police had “detained the instigators” of the altercation. The nationality of individuals detained was not disclosed in the announcement.
Two foreign nationals were detained for allegedly “using violence against a representative of the authority,” according to a Friday report from Kazan’s regional Investigative Committee.
Tehran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, posted on X that Iran’s senior diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, has “repeatedly” followed up on the event. In a separate post on Friday, Jalali denounced “any sort of misbehavior with Iranian students” and demanded that “the responsible Russian authorities” face consequences.
