Following the arrest of the PTI founder in a corruption case on May 9 of last year, Shireen Mazari, a former PTI leader, and eight other people were indicted on Monday in connection with the attack on the army’s general headquarters in Rawalpindi during violent protests.
Imran, who has been detained at Adiala Jail since August 2023, was taken into custody by the Rawalpindi police in January in connection with the May 9 demonstration case, while his associates Omar Ayub and former Punjab law minister Raja Basharat were taken into custody following an indictment by a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.
Judge Amjad Ali Shah of the anti-terrorism court (ATC) indicted Imran and a number of PTI leaders and supporters earlier this month in the same case.
Judge Shah convened the hearing in a courtroom at Adiala Jail, where the PTI founder was produced.
Nearly two dozen suspects, including Ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had their bail suspended by the prosecution.
Mazari, a former human rights minister, and eight other people were indicted by the court.
Sikandar Zeb, Colonel Ajmal Sabir Raja, and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, three of the accused, declined to sign the charge sheet, claiming there was not enough evidence against them. They stated that their 265D application ought to be considered initially, and they would sign the charge sheet following the application’s outcome.
Imran met with PTI leaders, including Sheikh Rasheed, Babar Awan, and Fawad Chaudhry, although he did not speak in front of the media.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, meanwhile, was dispatched to Lahore under strict security.
Gandapur’s convoy was halted outside Adiala Jail gate 5 as he arrived to meet with Imran but was denied access. After that, the caravan headed for Gorakhpur.
