Imphal: Members of many civil society organizations staged a march against the reimposition of AFSPA in portions of the northeastern state of Manipur on Tuesday in the Imphal West district, defying curfew.
However, because the march disobeyed curfew rules enforced in light of recent unrest in the northeastern state, the police stopped it at Keisampat junction.
From the Kwakeithel area of the district, members of the All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, and other local organizations led the demonstration, which traveled about 3.5 km before being dispersed, according to a protester.

“The reimposition of AFSPA in areas under six police stations is highly condemned by us. A few days after AFSPA was reinstated in Jiribam, there was a firing incident in the district,” he claimed.
He made reference to Sunday night’s Jiribam firing incident, which claimed one life and injured another.
The event happened in Jiribam’s Babupara neighborhood following a confrontation between security personnel and a mob that was damaging property.
According to the AFSPA, military personnel working in unrest have broad authority to conduct searches, make arrests, and discharge firearms if they believe it is essential for the “maintenance of public order.”
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act was recently reinstated by the Center in all six police station areas of Manipur, including the violent Jiribam.
The Union Home Ministry said in a statement that the decision was made because of the continued ethnic violence and the resulting unstable situation.
Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West, Lamlai in Imphal East, Jiribam in Jiribam district, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi, and Moirang in Bishnupur are the police station locations where AFSPA has been reinstated.
