Gilgit-Baltistan: At least 20 houses were severely damaged while standing crops and trees were destroyed after floods swept through Darel Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, officials confirmed.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall at around 6am, engulfed the Gamari area, leaving several families displaced. According to Assistant Commissioner Deral, Waseem Abbas, “Twenty houses were damaged, of which five were completely demolished. In addition, crops and trees were also damaged.
Locals said that many residents fled as the floodwaters rose, with dozens relocating to safer areas. They reported damage to the water channel system, cattle sheds, and livestock, further worsening the losses for villagers who rely heavily on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a safety advisory urging citizens not to go near drains and to stay indoors or in safe shelters during the rains.
Meanwhile, GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed that timely alerts from villagers had prevented greater loss of life. “On the instructions of Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, relief teams have been dispatched to Deral. Rescue and disaster management teams are working on an emergency basis,” he said.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also issued a high-priority alert for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in GB’s northern regions, warning of urban flooding in upper parts of the country.
Just last month, hundreds of people in Gilgit-Baltistan fell victim to water-borne diseases after devastating floods disrupted clean water supplies in several districts.
Authorities fear the situation may worsen as monsoon rains continue, making fragile valleys like Diamer’s Deral increasingly vulnerable to recurring disasters.
