OpenAI increased its challenge to Google’s hegemony on Monday by announcing that it is making ChatGPT-powered internet search accessible to all users.
In late October, the San Francisco-based tech company enhanced its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot with search engine capabilities, but only paid customers were able to use the tool.
According to the company, the recently released function allows users to get “quick, timely responses” along with links to pertinent online resources, which was previously necessary when using a conventional search engine.
The AI chatbot can now deliver real-time information from the internet thanks to the ChatGPT update.
In a YouTube video, OpenAI chief product officer Kevin Weil declared, “We’re bringing search to all logged-in free users of ChatGPT.”
This implies that it will be accessible everywhere you use ChatGPT. Examples of the new interface that OpenAI showcased looked like Google and Google Maps search results, but without the cluttered advertising.
Additionally, they resembled the user experience of Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine that, by highlighting the sources it cited in the response, provides a more conversational version of Google.
In the video, ChatGPT Search product lead Adam Fry stated, “We’re really just making the ChatGPT experience that you know better with up-to-date information from the web.”
“Starting today, we are distributing this to hundreds of millions of users.” OpenAI has included search into ChatGPT instead of releasing a stand-alone solution.
The search function can be explicitly activated using a web search icon, or it can be enabled by default.
The responses they gave were outdated because data on AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Claude from Anthropic, has been constrained by time cutoffs since their introduction.
On the other hand, Google and Microsoft both integrate online results with AI-generated responses.
The inclusion of internet search in ChatGPT may further cast doubt on the startup’s relationship with Microsoft, a significant OpenAI investor that is likewise attempting to outperform Google with its Bing search engine.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has led his organization to become a dominant force in the internet.
Microsoft, Tokyo-based conglomerate SoftBank, and AI chipmaker Nvidia were among the investors in a recent funding round that saw him successfully propel the company to an astounding $157 billion value.
Offering search engine capabilities to attract more customers will raise the company’s already high computer requirements and expenses.
