Iran’s foreign minister said Thursday that Iran had responded to a letter from US President Donald Trump that demanded nuclear discussions and threatened military action if it didn’t.
According to Abbas Araghchi, “this official response includes a letter in which our position regarding the current situation and Mr. Trump’s letter has been fully explained to the other party,” the official IRNA news agency reported.
Oman, which has previously acted as a go-between in the absence of diplomatic ties between the US and Iran, received the letter, he continued.
He didn’t mention when it was sent or what kind of answer it was.
“I’m not going to comment on that yet,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded when reporters questioned him on his jet over the Caribbean if the US had received the letter.
He stated that the president “obviously at that point, the president will decide what steps if he has any he wants to take next” and that the United States had anticipated a response.
Trump has stated that he is amenable to diplomatic discussions after withdrawing the US from an agreement in 2018 to lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.
At the beginning of March, the US president disclosed that he had written to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the top leader of Iran.
Trump has simultaneously advanced his “maximum pressure” policy, which calls for further sanctions on Tehran and the prospect of military action if it rejects talks.
“Our policy remains not to negotiate directly (with Washington) under ‘maximum pressure’ and the threat of military action, but indirect negotiations, such as those that took place in the past, can continue,” Araghchi stated.
