The two most nominated films for the 2025 Golden Globes, the Hollywood honors that begin the Oscar season, were the post-World War Two epic The Brutalist and the musical thriller Emilia Perez.
Netflix’s Spanish-language film Emilia Perez received ten nominations, while indie distributor A24’s The Brutalist received seven.
With the papal selection scenario, both films will contend for the top Globe Award for best picture drama. Bob Dylan biopic, Conclave An entire unknown science fiction epic Part Two of Dune: A Historical Drama The tale of sports journalists who covered an Olympic hostage situation is told in Nickel Boys and September 5.
Box office failure Wicked received four nominations and was based on a popular Broadway production about the witches in The Wizard of Oz. In the best movie musical or comedy category, it competes with Anora, a dark romantic comedy.
Films competing for the Academy Awards in March may benefit from the Globe nominations. The release timetable for this year was thrown off due to last year’s Hollywood strikes, and critics claim there isn’t a clear frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Unlike the almost 9,000 voters who choose the Academy Awards, 334 entertainment writers from 85 countries will choose the Globes winners.
Following complaints of unethical behavior and a lack of diversity, the Globes’ voting body was enlarged in subsequent years, and its organizers implemented changes.
The Globes event will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser for the first time on January 5. The show, which has historically been a more wild and drunken event than the Oscars, will be live on CBS and be streamed on Paramount+.
In Emilia Perez, Zoe Saldana plays a lawyer who assists a drug cartel boss (played by Spanish actor Karla Sofía Gascón) in feigning his death and changing his gender. The wife of the cartel leader is played by Selena Gomez. Globes voters nominated all three for acting honors.
Netflix, a streaming service that only shows films for a short time in theaters and has never won the coveted Best Picture Oscar, defeated traditional studios to secure 13 nominations from Globe voters.
With 23, the business also surpassed competitors in Globe TV nods. Variety’s TV editor, Michael Schneider, stated, “It serves as a reminder of the sheer dominance of that streaming platform.”
The epic story of a Hungarian immigrant who escapes the atrocities of World War Two to start over in the United States is told by Adrien Brody, a Globe contender for acting in the film The Brutalist.
Zendaya was nominated for the sports romance Challengers, Angelina Jolie for her role as opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, and Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for acting.
Both co-star Edward Norton, who plays folk singer Pete Seeger, and Timothee Chalamet, who plays music superstar Dylan in A Complete Unknown, were nominated.
Jeremy Strong, who played Trump lawyer Roy Cohn, and Sebastian Stan, who played President-elect Donald Trump in The Apprentice, were nominated. The movie has been referred to by Trump as “a politically disgusting hatchet job.”
The Bear, a restaurant story, was nominated five times in the TV categories. Shogun, a historical epic, and Only Murders in the Building, a mystery comedy, both received four.
