Kendrick Lamar just released a brand-new album, ‘GNX,’ and nobody saw it coming. The 12-track project landed Friday afternoon, with Kendrick announcing it simply by posting the album cover on Instagram.
The album is packed with references to some of the year’s biggest moments, starting with his fiery feud with Drake. On the opening track, “Wacced Out Murals,” Kendrick takes aim, rapping, “Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made,’ I prayed it was the edibles.” He’s talking about Snoop Dogg sharing one of Drake’s diss tracks earlier this year. But Snoop later clarified he wasn’t picking sides and gave props to both rappers.
Kendrick also addresses the controversy over him headlining the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans. Some fans felt Lil Wayne, a New Orleans native, should’ve been chosen instead. Kendrick responds in the same track, rapping, “Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down,” while also calling out other artists who didn’t congratulate him.
Another standout is “Heart Pt. 6,” a new chapter in Kendrick’s iconic “Heart” series. The title? It just so happens to match one of Drake’s diss tracks from earlier this year—coincidence or not, fans are already debating.
This surprise release caps off an epic year for Kendrick. His diss track “Not Like Us” was a massive hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and earning five Grammy nominations. He even turned his Juneteenth concert in LA into a victory lap, performing “Not Like Us” five times back-to-back.
With ‘GNX,’ Kendrick has once again cemented himself as one of hip-hop’s all-time greats. Fans are already dissecting the album for its lyrical gems and bold messages. Have you listened yet? Which track stands out the most?
