As he met with a group of US congressmen in Islamabad on Sunday, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi claimed that Pakistan was a “wall between terrorism and the rest of the world.”
Due to differing strategic agendas and common security concerns, Pakistan and the US have delicate and complicated relations.
The administration is scheduled to send a high-level team to the US today to address a recent 29% tariff on goods shipped to the US and to advance trade relations.
“Terrorism is a worldwide problem. In a statement released by the interior ministry, Naqvi was cited as stating, “The international community urgently needs to cooperate fully with Pakistan.”
According to a press release from the government-run PID, Naqvi met with Congressmen Jonathan Jackson, Tom Suozzi, and Jack Bergman in Islamabad today. Bergman co-chairs the Congressional Pakistan Caucus with Suozzi.
The meeting was also attended by Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker, and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.
Yesterday, the US delegation met with Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, the first high-level delegation from Capitol Hill to visit Pakistan in nearly two years.
A thorough discussion of bilateral relations, topics of shared interest, border security, and counterterrorism was covered at today’s meeting. Additionally, both parties discussed ways to improve economic, trade, and investment relations.
Naqvi emphasized the critical need for sharing technology and intelligence in the fight against terrorism. The minister went on to say that in the global sense, Pakistan’s tremendous sacrifices against terrorism were unparalleled.
According to Naqvi, the US congressmen’s visit was essential in emphasizing Pakistan’s unparalleled contribution to the war against terror.
US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan last month for its assistance in apprehending a terrorist who was responsible for the 2021 bombing in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 13 US military members.
According to Naqvi, Pakistan’s foreign policy places a high priority on having solid and long-lasting ties with the US. He referred to the gathering of the Suozzi-led Pakistan Caucus in the United States on April 30 as a positive step.
The US delegation’s attendance at the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025, which was held earlier this week in Islamabad, was also praised by the interior minister. He reaffirmed that the government will give investors every amenity and complete security.
Chaudhry, meanwhile, said he hopes the June counterterrorism dialogue between the US and Pakistan in the nation’s capital will be a major factor in fostering collaboration in that area.
According to reports, the US delegation stated that Pakistan’s contribution to the fight against terrorism needed to be emphasized. They also mentioned how “very talented and hardworking” the Pakistani community living in the US was.
During his February meeting with PTI leader Shahbaz Gill and former president Dr. Arif Alvi, Congressman Bergman expressed support for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and demanded his release.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s top aide, Tariq Fatemi, met Bergman and Suozzi during a series of high-level meetings in Washington the following month.
