MUZAFFARABAD: A civil society coalition spearheading the rights movement in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has prepared to broaden its network to the grassroots level and has threatened to hold authorities accountable if they fail to keep their commitments within the next six months.
The warning was given at a late Monday meeting of the core committee of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Action Committee (JKJAAC) in the Mirpur district town of Chakswari, where a number of other important decisions were also made.
“The JKJAAC congratulates the state’s citizens who were instrumental in the recent movement, especially during the lengthy march on May 11 and the lockdown and closure of the entry point on December 5, which resulted in notable victories,” the statement read.
It reminded the government that it had provided a six-month deadline for the complete implementation of the approved Charter of Demands in accordance with the February 4 notification and a written agreement following discussions with an official delegation on December 8.
“To improve public mobilization and organization, JKJAAC subcommittees will be established at the union council and ward levels during this six-month period, in consultation with the core committee members from the relevant districts.”
The meeting declared that its code of conduct will be strictly adhered to, prohibiting members from attending events hosted by other organizations or groups in their capacity as JKJAAC representatives without prior authorization.
The meeting voiced grave concerns about the Rathoa-Haryam Bridge construction delay, the failure to implement lower property transfer tax rates, the frequent power outages and low voltage problems, and the purported inability to improve the supply and quality of wheat flour. It also warned the government to fulfill its commitments or face full responsibility for the repercussions.
The JKJAAC acknowledged the confidence and support of the locals and Kashmiris living abroad, promising that decisions in the future will take their wishes into consideration and be carried out with their support.
