The ANI news agency reported that police officers made preliminary searches on school grounds after at least 40 schools in Delhi received a bomb threat via email on Monday, seeking $30,000.
This year, hundreds of bomb threats that were ultimately proven to be false have been made against airports, train stations, and schools.
According to government data, from the beginning of the year to mid-November, 999 fake bomb threats were sent to Indian airlines and airports, and 12 persons were detained during that time.
According to ANI, the threatening email was sent to two schools on Sunday night, claiming that several bombs were planted within buildings and would explode if the sender was not paid $30,000.
School officials called parents to take the pupils home for the day after receiving the emails on Monday morning at numerous other schools.
While police searched the school grounds for suspicious objects, parents were observed bringing up their kids from the gates of several schools.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by Delhi police officials.
Similar bomb threat emails that turned out to be hoaxes were sent to over 50 schools in Delhi and the nearby region of Noida in May.
