On Saturday, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig became the first contestant from Denmark to win the title of Miss Universe.
In the 73rd edition of the pageant, which took place in Mexico City, the 21-year-old dancer, businesswoman, and animal rights advocate defeated over 120 competitors.
Nigerian legal student Chidimma Adetshina came in first runner-up, followed by Mexican Maria Fernanda Beltran, Thai Suchata Chuangsri, and Venezuelan Ileana Marquez. The 28-year-old Marquez had already made history by becoming the first mother to win the title of Miss Venezuela.
This year’s competition featured ladies above the age of 28, which was the cutoff in prior pageants, after the 2023 competition featured married, plus-sized, and transgender participants.
Beatrice Njoya of Malta was one of them; she was the oldest woman to make it to the grand finale at the age of forty.
Prior to being harassed over a nationality dispute that compelled her to represent Nigeria, Adetshina was a finalist for Miss South Africa.
The competition, which has been criticized for encouraging archaic notions of femininity, was held in Mexico for the fifth time.
After being purchased by JKN Global Group, which is led by Thai media tycoon and transgender rights activist Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, the pageant has attempted to change and reinvent itself.
The Mexico-based Legacy Holding purchased a 50% share in Miss Universe in January.
